BS 7671 (Amendment 4 – PoE) and BS 8214_2026 – Awareness for Approved Companies
This bulletin raises awareness of two newly published standards and explains how they relate to existing NSI requirements:
1. BS 7671 Amendment 4 (2026) – Power over Ethernet (PoE)
- BS 7671 now formally recognises and addresses Power over Ethernet (PoE) installations.
- No changes are being made to NSI Codes of Practice or approval criteria as a result.
- Existing requirements under Section 20 (“Wiring Rules”) and relevant NSI Codes already require compliance with BS 7671.
- Companies using PoE should ensure installations are:
- Properly designed
- Suitable for their intended purpose
- Installed using appropriate cables and methods
- Adequately documented
- NSI views PoE as an extension of existing electrical installation considerations rather than a new compliance requirement.
- Companies must obtain BS 7671 directly from BSI, IET or another licensed provider, as NSI cannot provide it through its standards subscription service.
2. BS 8214:2026 – Fire-Resisting and Smoke Control Doors
- BS 8214:2026 provides guidance on the specification, installation and performance of fire and smoke control doors.
- NSI confirms that existing requirements within NCP 109 already cover the key principles of the new standard.
- No amendments to NCP 109 are required.
- When installing access control equipment on fire or smoke doors, companies should:
- Identify such doors during surveys and risk assessments
- Ensure installations do not compromise fire or smoke performance
- Follow manufacturer guidance and supporting evidence
- Seek advice where drilling, cabling or hardware installation could affect door integrity
- Retain evidence where there is uncertainty
